Your questions, answered
Your Treatment Experience
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a private consultation where we discuss your medical history, digestive concerns, medications, lifestyle and reasons for considering colonic hydrotherapy.
This allows us to assess whether treatment is appropriate and gives you an opportunity to ask questions.
If it's suitable to proceed, we'll explain the process before beginning your treatment. Water is introduced slowly and carefully, with your comfort monitored throughout.
Your appointment concludes with aftercare guidance and an opportunity to discuss any further questions.
We never want you to feel rushed, uncomfortable or unsure about what's happening.
How long does an appointment take?
Your initial consultation and treatment is approximately 90 minutes, allowing time for your health assessment, questions, treatment and aftercare discussion.
Returning appointments are approximately 60 minutes.
We intentionally allow generous appointment times so every client receives the attention, privacy and personalised care they deserve.
Does colonic hydrotherapy hurt?
Colonic hydrotherapy may cause sensations of fullness, pressure or mild cramping as water enters and leaves the bowel.
At Sérava Wellness, we use slow, controlled fills and carefully monitor your comfort throughout the procedure.
We believe treatment should never involve pushing through significant pain. If you feel uncomfortable, we can adjust or stop the treatment at any time.
Your comfort and wellbeing will always take priority.
Is colonic hydrotherapy embarrassing?
This is one of the most common concerns people have before their first appointment, and we completely understand why.
Digestive health can feel like a personal topic, but at Sérava Wellness, these conversations are a normal part of what we do.
Our closed-system equipment allows waste to pass through enclosed tubing, and you'll remain appropriately covered throughout your treatment.
We provide a private, welcoming environment where questions are encouraged and judgement has no place.
Will I be left alone during my treatment?
No. At Sérava Wellness, our treatments are practitioner-led.
Your practitioner remains with you throughout the procedure, managing water flow, monitoring your comfort and providing reassurance or explanations whenever needed.
We believe being present with our clients is an important part of providing thoughtful, individualised care.
Is the equipment hygienic?
Hygiene and infection prevention are essential parts of our clinic procedures.
We use a closed-system colonic hydrotherapy device, appropriate single-use components and cleaning and disinfection procedures between clients.
We're always happy to explain our equipment and hygiene practices so you can feel informed about your treatment environment.
Preparing for Your Appointment
How should I prepare for my colonic?
Preparation is simple.
We recommend arriving comfortably hydrated and avoiding a particularly heavy meal immediately before your appointment.
There's no need to fast, undertake a restrictive cleanse or take special supplements beforehand.
Please ensure you've disclosed your medical conditions, medications and any recent procedures so we can assess your suitability for treatment.
Can I eat before my appointment?
Yes. There's no requirement to arrive with an empty stomach.
A light, balanced meal a couple of hours before your appointment may be more comfortable than eating a particularly heavy meal immediately beforehand.
We encourage you to maintain your usual nutrition and hydration rather than making significant dietary changes.
Should I take laxatives before my appointment?
No. We don't recommend taking laxatives or completing a bowel preparation specifically for colonic hydrotherapy unless advised by your treating healthcare professional.
If you regularly use prescribed bowel medications, please continue to follow your medical practitioner's instructions.
Can I have colonic hydrotherapy during my period?
Menstruation alone does not necessarily prevent treatment.
However, if you're experiencing significant cramping, heavy bleeding, dizziness or discomfort, postponing may be more appropriate.
We encourage you to discuss any concerns with us before your appointment.
After Your Treatment
What should I expect after my colonic?
Everyone responds differently.
Most people feel comfortable returning to their normal activities right away.
We'll discuss appropriate aftercare with you post treatment.
Will I need to use the bathroom afterwards?
Some clients feel the need to use the bathroom immediately after treatment, while others don't.
Bathroom facilities are available at the clinic, and you're welcome to take your time before leaving.
What should I eat after colonic hydrotherapy?
There's no need to follow an extreme or restrictive diet following your appointment.
We encourage balanced, nourishing meals and adequate hydration, with consideration for your individual dietary requirements.
At Sérava Wellness, we believe digestive wellbeing is supported by consistent everyday habits rather than short-term restrictions.
Can I return to my normal activities after treatment?
Many clients return to their usual activities after their appointment, provided they're feeling well.
We recommend listening to your body, maintaining normal hydration and allowing yourself time to rest if needed.
If you experience persistent or concerning symptoms, seek medical advice.
Digestive Health and Treatment Frequency
Can colonic hydrotherapy help with constipation?
Colonic hydrotherapy can result in the evacuation of bowel contents during treatment.
Constipation may be influenced by diet, hydration, medications, bowel motility, pelvic floor function or underlying medical conditions.
Can colonic hydrotherapy help with bloating?
Bloating is a common digestive concern and can be influenced by many factors, including constipation, trapped gas, food intolerances, hormonal changes and changes in bowel motility.
Some clients report feeling less bloated following colonic hydrotherapy, particularly when bowel contents are evacuated during treatment.
At Sérava Wellness, we believe it's important to look beyond the symptom and consider what may be contributing to digestive discomfort. Our approach combines colonic hydrotherapy with education and a greater understanding of healthy digestive function.
Does colonic hydrotherapy remove toxins?
Our bodies are naturally equipped with sophisticated systems for processing and eliminating waste, with the liver, kidneys and digestive tract all playing essential roles.
Colonic hydrotherapy assists with the evacuation of bowel contents through the gentle introduction and release of filtered water.
At Sérava Wellness, our philosophy centres on supporting healthy digestive habits, understanding bowel function and recognising the importance of regular elimination as part of overall digestive wellbeing.
Will colonic hydrotherapy affect my gut bacteria?
Your gut microbiome is home to trillions of microorganisms that play an essential role in digestion, immune function and overall gut health.
During colonic hydrotherapy, warm, filtered water is gently introduced into the colon to assist with the evacuation of bowel contents. This process influences the intestinal environment, including the microorganisms present.
At Sérava Wellness, we see colonic hydrotherapy as an opportunity to take a more considered approach to digestive wellbeing. Rather than focusing on the treatment alone, we encourage clients to support their gut microbiome through diverse nutrition, adequate fibre, hydration and healthy bowel habits.
Our philosophy is simple: digestive wellness is about more than what we put into our bodies. It's also about understanding how our digestive systems function and supporting healthy, regular elimination.
How many colonic hydrotherapy treatments will I need?
There is no established number of colonic hydrotherapy treatments required for digestive health.
Every person has a different health history, and gut story.
Some clients choose to attend once, while others may enquire about returning.
We don't believe in pressuring clients into a predetermined number of sessions. After we assist you with your first session, we will know what your colonic journey looks like after that.
Health and Safety
Is colonic hydrotherapy suitable for everyone?
No. Colonic hydrotherapy isn't appropriate for everyone, and certain medical conditions, medications and previous procedures may increase the risks associated with treatment.
Before your first appointment, we'll review your health history and discuss any factors that may affect your suitability.
In some circumstances, medical clearance may be necessary, or we may recommend that you don't proceed.
Your safety will always come before treatment.
Are there any contraindications to colonic hydrotherapy?
Yes. Colonic hydrotherapy may be inappropriate for people with certain conditions, including active inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, bowel obstruction, recent abdominal or colorectal surgery, significant rectal bleeding, serious heart or kidney disease, and pregnancy.
Other conditions and medications may also increase treatment risks.
This is not an exhaustive list, which is why a thorough health assessment is an essential part of our process.
Can I have a colonic if I have IBS?
If you have IBS, discuss your symptoms and treatment options with your treating healthcare professional before considering colonic hydrotherapy. We review your health history before any appointment and may recommend that treatment does not proceed.
Colonic hydrotherapy should not be regarded as an established treatment for IBS or a substitute for medical care.
Can I have a colonic if I'm taking GLP-1 medication?
If you take a GLP-1 medication, speak with your prescribing healthcare professional about digestive symptoms before considering colonic hydrotherapy.
Tell us which medications you take during your suitability assessment. Do not change prescribed medication for an appointment without advice from your prescriber.
Can colonic hydrotherapy support liver health and people without a gallbladder?
The liver, gallbladder and digestive system work closely together. Your liver continuously produces bile, which helps digest fats and provides a pathway for certain waste products to leave the body through the digestive tract.
The gallbladder normally stores and concentrates bile, releasing it when needed during digestion. After gallbladder removal, the liver continues producing bile, but instead of being stored, it flows more continuously into the small intestine. For some people, this change can contribute to bloating, altered bowel habits, loose stools or digestive discomfort.
Colonic hydrotherapy uses warm, filtered water to assist with the evacuation of bowel contents from the large intestine.
At Sérava Wellness, our approach recognises the important relationship between digestion, bile function and regular bowel movements. We take the time to understand your digestive history, particularly following gallbladder removal, and assess whether colonic hydrotherapy is appropriate for you.
Our philosophy is centred on understanding the whole digestive system, supporting healthy elimination habits and helping clients make informed decisions about their gut health.
Can I have colonic hydrotherapy while pregnant?
We don't offer colonic hydrotherapy during pregnancy.
If you're experiencing constipation, bloating or digestive discomfort while pregnant, we recommend speaking with your GP, midwife or obstetrician about appropriate management options.
